Why are the population of Wood Turtles decreasing? Female wood turtles are known to travel long distances in search of an appropriate nesting habitat, especially for laying eggs. After they reach a suitable nesting area, when they start to lay there eggs, many get disturbed! Not only that, but not many live during the process when the female mother is giving birth. In addition, Wood turtles are getting mowed over in the fields and many people aren't cautious about what they are mowing over.
How can you help? 1.) It really isn't as hard as you think! Just a theory: before one of your parents/guardians starts the lawn, please look around for turtles! If you do find one in your backyard, take it and put it somewhere where it will be protected but at the same time have lot's of sun! If this wood turtle is still there, when the sun sets, take it to a shady area, where much leaves and tree's are. After you do those jobs, you have done a great deed that will help both the eco-system and the environment around you!
2.) Since many eggs that female wood turtles are producing get disturbed, a theory to help has not yet been discovered but if you think of some way to help save these eggs for more wood turtles to stay alive, try it, it may help.
